So much for that enhanced artistic direction. Atleast some good things came out of it.

By the way will the sniper rifle be included in the mod files? Last I saw it was in a usable state,so someone tech savvy enough could retrieve it.

See, they explicitly allow you to create whatever sort of level you want using the SDK, so long as it's distributed free of charge, the companies owning the product are allowed to use it in any way possible, and it doesn't violate the copyrights of others.

I guess people are not willing to listen to the truth here, having downvoted my post and upvoted the other one. Fine, let me directly post from the SDK's EULA.

" You may use this software to create or modify levels for use with the game Deus Ex (henceforth referred to as "levels") subject to these restrictions:

Any levels you create can only work with the full, legal version of Deus Ex.

Your levels cannot contain any modifications or changes to any executable file included in this distribution or those distributed with Deus Ex.

Your levels cannot contain any illegal, trademarked, or copyrighted materials unless you obtain written consent of the trademark or copyright holders.

Any levels you create and distribute must contain your name and email address and must be distributed with a readme file that contain this sentence, "This level was not made and is not supported by Ion Storm and Eidos Interactive."

Your levels must be distributed free of charge. Neither you nor anyone else may sell, rent, lease or commercially exploit these levels in any way. You may only exchange them at no charge to licensed users of Deus Ex.

When you publicly distribute your level you automatically grant Ion Storm and/or Eidos Interactive the perpetual, royalty free right to use, modify, license and distribute your level in any way we choose.

You expressly acknowledge and agree that use of the level editor is at your sole risk. This software and documentation are provided "AS IS" and without warranty of any. Further this software is "UNSUPPORTED" by either Ion Storm or Eidos Interactive. At no time will agents or employees be required to provide the end-user assistance with the installation, configuration or operation of this software.

Under no circumstances including negligence shall Ion Storm, Eidos Interactive or their Directors, officers employees or agents can be held liable for any incidental, special, consequential or any other damages that may result from the use or inability to use this software. Some states do not allow the limitation or exclusion of liability for incidental or consequential damages so these limitations or exclusions may not apply to you. In no event shall our total liability to you for any damages, losses, and causes of action exceed the amount paid by you for this software. If any portion of this license is unenforceable, the remaining portion shall remain in effect."

" Technically they can DMCA every DX mod online if they felt like it."

Except that they can't, *******. The EULA pretty much allows people to mod Deus Ex using the SDK as much as they want.

Also stop pretending that this deal was for a noble cause. New Vision had 150k downloads and HDTP 88k downloads before Revision even got any hype, they took up that deal because they wanted to, and that's ok.

Why do you have to insult people who dislike this mod? This is my beef with everyone who tries to defend this mod: they act like all the decisions the team made are sacred and clearly anyone who dislikes it don't appreciate the hard work put into it.

This ties further into the dangerous philosophy most modders have that something can't be criticized just because it's free and effort was put into it, even though none of these make a project good by default.

They're not full fledged developers though, they pretty much work with someone's else's IP, coding, mechanics and assets under the condition that whatever they release will be tied to the base game, and that it will be free. So they are content modifying peoples, or modders for short.

I do not advocate the bad behaviour that's been on this page, I was merely stating possible reasons people are upset about it. If you check Caustic Creative's Twitter, you would know that Square Enix forced them to make it a Steam exclusive so Jonas isn't quite right about it being their prerogative.

Let's go back to talking about the mod eh? How good is it? How much money is it worth? What exactly is good about this mod?

Maybe you should check why there's an outrage instead of blindly defending the decision.

First, paying for a copy just to play a mod is unethical because it gives SE money they don't deserve.

Second, it's bad for the modders because it'll make people reluctant to play the mod. Just because the game can be got for cheap doesn't mean paying for the mod is worth it, many indie games are sold for less than a dollar on Steam and they're not worth even that. Not everyone is a compulsive spender you know.

Third, and most important, since people paid money for a mod, it's going to come under greater scrunity because what was merely an investment of time and bandwidth is now an investment of money, which will make them demand more from it.

I understand that there are workarounds, but this doesn't change the above.

So they only got the Steam release because they had someone in touch with SE, not because the mod was good. In any case I bet none at SE cares for this mod beyond using it for a publicity stunt and making some small money off it.

You do realize that from a legal standpoint Revision is just a Deus Ex mod and making mods for Deus Ex is legal? If they never approached SE nothing bad would have happened.

Unfortunately I think that's how the area will look like in the final version, here's Bjorn's screenshot of that area. I.imgur.com

Hmm.. are you sure this concept will work? Half Life's engine wasn't really famous for its jumping puzzles.

I know this mod is dead, but one day someone can come back and utilize this concept elsewhere in a new mod.

Looks like a cool Metroidvania. Will there be any good well hidden secrets? Maybe even secret areas?

Pretty cool looking game. Too bad the flying sections were so short.

Here is the Steam Greenlight page, and here is the section that relates to mods coming on Steam:

Steamcommunity.com

My game is a mod – can I still submit it to Steam Greenlight?
Yes, you can submit your mod to Steam Greenlight, but in order to be launched on Steam you will need to have a full engine license in place for your game. If you have a Source Engine mod, you can learn more here. For other engines you will need to work with them directly.

For the people interested in it anyway.

Uh, in what way is the light version butchered? I downloaded it just now and everything seems to work, all the maps seem to be there. The only thing missing is the music.

Still I'll wait for whatever this SE deal is to get over I guess. Let's see.
