every time i download a mod for portal it always starts up with a white screen and the sound to the valve logo intro, after the audio is done it gives me an error noise and shuts down portal. Somebody please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

for every mod i try to download it never works the intro is just a white screen and when the audio is done it gives me an error noise and shuts of the game! someone tell please me what I'm doing wrong.
