Excellent! I know that this is historically accurate and am glad you implemented it.
Maybe you can give other units unique skills as well? Like for European mounted knights and sergeants to let the horse kick out with the hooves to push infantry away for example.

It's not an ahistorical fantasy if you want to roleplay someone who is not ordinary in every way. Depending on personal preference, people are more interesting to play the more unique they are.
Besides, the game starts historical, but through decisions of both player and AI will inevitably develop ahistorically.

I think it is always better to let people choose, giving them the option to roleplay. Don't forget that people can change their religion and still keep clothing/armor of their culture. Or adapt (partially) local culture while keeping their religion. Didn't Outremer French for example adapt local clothing?
