Although I haven't yet tried this on Forgotten Hope, the following has allowed me to easily play mods on the Steam version:
1. Replace steamapps/common/battlefield 2/BF2.exe with the BF2.exe installed by the DVD version
2. Install mod as per usual, treating steamapps/common/battlefield 2/ as the BF2 install location
3. Run mod executable and enjoy!
This will also avoid erroneous punk buster MD5 sum related kicks.
This does not interfere with launching BF2 from Steam, or as far as I can tell trigger any sort of integrity protection or broken anti-hack code, although it probably prevents the Steam overlay from working.
