Report RSS Where the UE1 Folks Went?

Get the previous post over and done and out of the way. So I studied Unreal Engine 1 games years ago. I think it's time to wonder where it's going to end up. Some of the previous games... in America, where they used the Unreal Engine to made but you'll wonder what some of those developers have placed on their CVs and makes you wonder where they put their skill.

Rune (PC/PS2)

Rune released in 2000 was the first game in the Unreal Engine to allow the characters to weld melee only weapons. You take control of a Viking and has to save the land from the evil god Odin. The game sported a third person perspective, which was new for the time for the Unreal Engine 1. The game was ported onto the PlayStation 2. I played the PlayStation 2 version. The game also had a mission pack also which wasn't ported but for the fans also. The third person view and melee only weapons really did make the game different that the time. I'm surprised that it used the Unreal Engine to do that!

Star Trek Deep Space Nine: The Fallen

Star Trek Deep Space Nine: The Fallen was released in 2000 also. Also places the camera in third person perspective unlike the previous Star Trek game Klingon Honor Guard. Some other nice features include scaning bots to be able to tune the frequency of the phaser and 3D animated portraits for characters who talk during gameplay.

New Legends Xbox

New Legends was an XBox exclusive. Is said to be powered by the Unreal Engine. Not much comfirmation regarding this however some of the elements from previous Unreal Engine games seems to confirm this. The idea that the characters are seen in third person view and the ability characters can hold swords and even firearms during the game. Most noticeably the character portrait seen in Deep Space Nice: The Fallen is also seen in this game, which looks and behaves every similar. A shame that this game never got released outside of North America and reminds an Xbox exclusive. Maybe clear that some folks who've worked on previous Unreal Engine 1 games really wanted to make this for the Xbox.

Also worth mentioning is Deus Ex which managed to get a PlayStation 2 release. A big deal at the time. So it makes me wonder where to go with my development. Also I wouldn't be surprised if there's someone out there who makes a Indie based game before I do using the Unreal Engine 1, so I'll be stuck making a mod for a very long time and I'll be very surprised if I get any rights in UE1 development. Not sure if anyone went straight to the Unreal Engine 2.Anyone can grab hold of the UE development kits, they were made for anyone.
