Faces of War: The 2nd World War

Mod review

Very, VERY fun mod. For an early alpha there's a lot to play around with, and plenty of material for making infantry missions.

The sound effects are surprisingly crisp and satisfying. I know they're placeholder, but I hope they don't change *too* much.

There are a few places where the mod is rough around the edges. The AI fires submachine guns and machine guns exclusively semi-auto which is a little odd, and all the allied soldiers have greek names. These are very minor problems for an early alpha to have, and do not detract from the fun of the current build.

My main concern going forward is that the team is short on manpower and trying to tackle a huge task (both European and Pacific fronts at once).

As an early alpha this gets an A+. I hope they can keep up the good work.

The Red Wars

Mod review

This is an amazing mod! It's a LONG way to go from finished at this point but the devs seem to be working pretty steadily on it and have made quite a lot of progress. I am very pleased with the Red Wars indeed.

Space Engineers

Early access game review

There is so much you can do with this game! It's like minecraft if minecraft had good graphics and was ten times easier to use. The developers have been releasing weekly updates for some time now, so there's always something new in the game. I couldn't more heartily recommend this game

Company of Heroes 2

Game review

Company of Heroes 2 is a game that I really want to like more. The sound effects are truly atmospheric and the visuals are stunning, but that's about it.

The maps leave a lot to be desired. They're all fairly good maps, but all feel like the same scenario: fighting over farmland, occasionally with a tactically irrelevant river involved. Where, outside of the campaign, are the war torn streets of Stalingrad? Even the recent update that brought a beloved COH1 map into the game brought, langres, the one map that was like the others in COH2, when it could have introduced Vire River Valley (which would have been fun to play in the "winter" mode) or Lyon or Montereme (for some desperately needed variety).

The combat, aside from being visually pleasing, is frustrating. A squad of shock infantry, when placed at point blank range against a helpless artillery crew, has to fire continuously for something like 15 seconds before they kill their target, while a single grenade or mortar shell can wipe out that same squad in one blast. Tanks have to fire about five well placed rounds at enemy tanks before destroying them, but can fall through ice and be lost in a moment's notice.

I rate this game a 7 and not a 6 because I do think there is potential. Updates to the game that make infantry less useless and add maps with variety could make the game much better. Even just the release of a map editor would do so much to improve this game.

I'm rooting for Company of Heroes 2, but it has a ways to go

The mod just encompasses so much more than the original game. There is simply way more for you to do. I thought this was simply an all-round excellent mod.

The Great War 1918

Mod review

A truly amazing mod. I've played all of the major COH mods, from Eastern Front to Blitzkrieg but this might honestly be my favorite. What makes this mod stand out to such a degree is the way in which it takes the familiar platform of Company of Heroes and makes it new again with a fresh emphasis on large infantry formation tactics and artillery. The sound effects for the rifles and the pistols are very satisfying to listen to. The models and textures for the units are similarly impressive.

I do want to draw special attention to the greatest accomplishment of this mod: The ability to dig proper trenches. This feature was sorely lacking in the original game and it's good to see my dream for this game finally come true.

I am really impressed with this mod and sincerely hope it's developers continue to work on it. I'd love to see what they do with the American Expeditionary Force as well.
