Doom Zero

Mod review

Finally a Megawad that feels like the original game and add-ons.
Great stuff!

Battle It Out In Birmingham

Mod review

The mapper showed that he could have been good at least as far as architecture is concerned, but every map is like an unfinished sketch (you can even directly run to the nukebutton...), and gameplay doesn't work unless you play with cheats (HORDES of enemies with not enough health for instance).

Not worth anyone's time.

Age of Evil

Mod review

Pretty decent overall.

The new art is very undetailed but it has its charm and the merit of having been done from scratch.
The new voices are not too bad but some of them get repetitive quickly.

The first levels are a bit repetitive but things do get better as you go on with new weapons and enemies.
Generally speaking the level layouts are fun and varied, however most things are not very detailed and some rooms look a bit bland.
The best level was the train.

A decent mod overall that goes in increasing quickly as you play.

The Final Confrontation

Mod review

Overall pretty good episode of classic DN3D action.

The mapper is really at making levels on a huge scale, with well thought layout and progression. On the contrary however, detailing can be lacking and some indoor environments look very dull.

Things do get better as the episode goes on though, and map06 "The Pyramid" is very memorable.

Maarten's Crucial Conflict

Mod review

Really good episode. It's only 3 maps but each is fairly long.

For a Duke Nukem 3D episode, the story is well done. There is also a good feel of progression between maps.

The author used DN3D effects and the possibilities of the Build engine in an inventive way which leads to rather unique moments.

Levels also have fun layout and their share of interesting architecture and detailing, though it never goes overboard.

My only regret is that some areas are a bit cramped at times, and some of the weapons (freezer, shrinker) are lacking.

ADG Episode

Mod review

Very solid episode of classic Duke3D action.

Sadly not perfect, gameplay is too shotgun oriented, some areas here and ther have dull lighting, and health-ratio is a bit tight. But that pretty much summarizes all the complaints I could have about this episode, so overall it's not much.

The thing I like the most about the episode is the architecture design which is very much to my liking.

DaikariN

Mod review

Absolutely great, this episode is everything I want to see in Duke Nukem 3D.

All the maps feel very classic in terms of layout and gameplay, and it's executed in a way that shows the mapper understood exactly everything that made the original game good and executed it in a digest way that plays around the classics. The dose of realism in the detailing is spot on, there is just enough to make it look good and believable while not restraining gameplay. Architecture and shading are great and varied.

Past the first couple of levels, more originality is also brought in terms of theme and location, which keeps the experience fresh. There is even a bit of Quake influence that fits surpringsly well.
The mapper also uses some new textures (which he probably made himself) that fit perfectly, some of them are even based on some textures of the original game and the average player wouldn't even notice it is new textures.

A very overlooked and underrated episode. Play it!

A very underrated.

The Evasion

Mod review

Good mod, there is a bit of everything in this one (Xen, office, lab, outdoor, underwater, etc.)

I really like the design of indoor locations. It was detailed but still looked very Half-Lise-ish. My favourite design is the lab-looking enviromnent just before you use the elevator that crashes.

In terms of layout there are a couple of parts in which you can go into several locations in the order you want. Of course there is only one "true" path out of those but it's still good to be given this choice and sense of non-linearility.

There are also 3 (at least I found 3) secrets places to find which always is always a plus in terms of layout. One of them even triggers a cool scripted event.

I played on Hard and difficulty and health ratio was spot on. I was always around 50HP which made me stay on my edge but each time my HP started to get lower I'd find HP and armor to get back to 50. I died a couple of times though in the toughest parts.

There is tons of ammo so you don't need to be conservative.

My only grip is that I encountered a couple of bugs : during the elevator crash I was ******* around in the border of the elevator which killed me during the crash; after that I couldn't keep playing after the next cutscene. Loading the latest autosave would even crash the game, so I had to reload a previous save (which was only a couple of mins before so it wasn't a big deal).
Also in the last level, in the tunnel I got stuck in between the army tuck and the pile of sandbags. Against no big deal because I had just saved as well.

Recommended mod.
There is a bit of everything, design is clean and just detailed enough with interesting layout.
Gameplay is fun with a spot on difficulty.
