Dark Whispers

Mod review may contain spoilers

A very short custom story about... what exactly?

This isn't a joke about having amnesia, the plot (along with this custom story in general) is very forgettable, and isn't aided by the very poor English from beginning to end.

Other than that, the few puzzles this story has are okay, nothing was too difficult and the keys weren't too hard to find.

The map design feels almost claustrophobic, which didn't bode well for the segments in which the monster made an appearance, who by the way, has a very dull design.

Overall, it's a harmless custom story that can get a few scares out of you; the map design and plot are very lacking, but it can easily be beaten in under 40 minutes.

A Gruntly Halloween

Happy Halloween!

This was a short, harmless, but fun custom story. Frankly I didn't know what to expect from this; it turned out to be a fun comedy with a few healthy doses of fear.

The mediocre plot is mended by the comedy, which is right up my alley. It actually had me laughing a few times.

My only gripe with this custom story is the map design; it started off strong, but ended up getting lazy (especially with the corn maze).

The music that goes with each map is a perfect fit, and a nice escape from the usual uneasy horror soundtracks.

This is a simple Halloween-themed custom story, you can beat it in under 20 minutes, so you have nothing to lose with this one.

Obscurity

Mod review may contain spoilers

So I got bored one night, and there's nothing quite like having the **** scared out of you to alleviate boredom. I went to another list of best custom stories, and this one caught my eye, so I gave it a shot.

By god I definitely got scared more than a few times in this one; the horror aspect is done really well. On a few occasions, the horror was replaced with annoyance when the monsters got stuck on doors or wouldn't move when they were supposed to.

The maps are all very well made, (except for the mines, which can be confusing) and they all feel as if they belong in the base game.

The puzzles all made sense and I found them all to be easily solvable.

The story is consistent and easy to follow, but the ending (at least for me) felt really unsatisfying. The soundtrack perfectly fits the story.

The voice acting was good, but it lacked emotion at important parts, especially near the ending.

Even though the story ended unsatisfactorily, at least it wasn't as much of a waste of time as The Great Work; I got through Obscurity in around an hour-and-a-half, so if you're not sure about trying this custom story out, you don't have much to lose.

The Four Horsemen

Mod review may contain spoilers

Well, this story gets the honor of ending my tradition of rating Amnesia Custom Stories multiples of 3

This is another short custom story I saw on multiple "best custom stories" lists, so I had to see for myself. I wasn't disappointed, but I also wasn't too impressed.

I never really felt any sense of danger while playing, except in the storage area, and that was short-lived.

The design of each map, especially after the mansion, is interesting and fleshed out; all of the horsemen's rooms are easily discernible from eachother.

I got confused at a few points, but the puzzles all made sense. Nothing too insane, other than a trial-and-error lever section.

The story is creative, but the ending felt like it was missing something.

Overall, this custom story was a little too easy for me, but it's evident that a lot of time was put into it; especially into the voice acting, that **** was top-notch.

Key to Freedom

Mod review may contain spoilers

Wow, this was great!

This is a short but sweet custom story that packs in an unexpected amount of content!

The few times the Servant Grunt showed up were not very special, but the brief appearance of the Kaernks had me on the edge of my seat. What really took the cake in terms of fear value, were the eerie statues, the glowing white eyes, and all the times that I was told to simply "RUN".

The design and gimmicks of each map are very well done, the graveyard especially. Although I do believe that the room with the crystal balls is way too big despite having so few important things in it, this isn't a dealbreaker.

The few puzzles there are, are almost entirely trial and error, but I never found too much trouble with them. They're all solvable without the use of a tutorial.

Now the story, which is a common gripe of mine when it comes to custom stories, is actually executed very well. There isn't much when it comes to story, but that can be a good thing. I never forgot my reason for exploring the old manor, and the custom story didn't constantly remind me.

As of now, this is the best custom story I've played; I give this a 9, following my unintentional tradition of rating everything a multiple of 3.

La Caza

Mod review may contain spoilers

This is a relatively short custom story that I came across on multiple "best custom stories" lists, so naturally I had to check it out.

It's alright, definitely not worth the title of "best", but I enjoyed it.

The chase segments really got me, I jumped a few times. Some may see them as cheap, but they were quick rushes that got my blood pumping.

The story, however, is very inconsistent. After the first few rooms, the "All-cure" story is thrown out in favor of mock-Aztec mythology that doesn't make any sense.

Story aside, the design of each map is good. The monsters are well-executed (in my opinion), but my immersion was broken right at the end when the final monster got stuck in the doorway.

Overall the story was the weakest part, and the adrenaline rushes only somewhat made up for it. I will give props to the creator for including custom voice acting, and with multiple people too, it's deserving of some respect.

The Great Work

Mod review

I gave this mod a fair shot. I was going to finish the game and then review, but I didn't even get to finish it due to a bug near the end of game.

I have no idea how anyone could beat this without a tutorial; items are hidden in places that don't make sense, and many of the puzzles are convoluted (especially in the beginning few rooms). I had to use the tutorial made by the modmaker himself to help get through most parts of the mod, and even then I got stumped at some parts; maybe due to my bad comprehension of English but nevertheless.

The new monsters don't fit in with the art style, and constantly get stuck on corners and objects, I had to purposely kill myself on three different occasions just to progress.

The story is unique enough, and it's honestly the saving grace of this mod, but I wish I could have seen the end of it.

(This is not a spoiler btw) Near the end of the game in the East Wing, there is a shovel in the garden. I jumped on it just out of boredom because shovels are glitchy and fun, but the fun was quickly ruined when the shovel clipped me into one of the walls, and I couldn't get out. When I saved and exited, I couldn't load the story again. I tried multiple times, then it finally loaded... into the very beginning of the custom story.

5 hours completely wasted.

TL;DR - Good story from what I played, but nonsensical puzzles and broken monsters
