Could you maybe the Ming army divided into two different types. You see historically the Ming had two armies. One army laid in the north and was primarily light and heavy cavalry based and was designed to counter the ever looming threat that the mongols would return to re-establish their control over China as they had during the Yuan Dynasty. The southern army was designed to fight in places like vietnam and South East asia and as such was primarily based on Gunpowder infantry. They had these really cool rocket towers that worked almost like a missle barrage. Here I've linked several articles about the ming army that should help in your development.
