Slender: The Haunted Metro

Game review

This is a beautiful Slender remake. The game itself wasn't all that scary but you can't blame that on the developer. I'd personally say it's not scary for me because of 2 things:
1) The whole "Slenderman" hype has calmed down since the original 8 Pages game got released, and
2) I've played a fair few horror games on my channel now and some really have made me yelp like an injured dog.

That being said, this is utterly gorgeous to play in UE4 and Slender did get the jump on me a couple of times. I feel the developer could've used some other sound effects in the main menu rather than ripping them straight from Silent Hill but other than that this is a very well recommended game.

It's basically the original 8 Pages game but with modern graphics, a new location and a bit of a story for the protagonist. A worthy successor to the original.

The Trapdoor

Mod review

An absolute fantastic romp through the home and castle of the Thing upstairs, tended to by his loyal servant Berk. Now all imagined within the world of Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

You play as Jonathan Burke as you figure out what happened to you previously, then, the Master calls. As you unlock more of the story, you meet up with your old pal Boney. Ah, yes, good ol' Boney. He'll protect you against the unspeakable horrors the dwell down there. In the dark. Waiting to come out.

DON'T YOU OPEN THAT TRAPDOOR.

So as your Master calls from his chamber for more food, a near impossible task to quell his enormous appetite, you wonder deeper into the castle, Boney in hand, to find any food you can get your hands on. But will you always serve your Master?

I must admit I've been a big fan of the TV show in my childhood. The dark humour and comedy of the show is brilliantly re-imagined in this custom story. Don't expect a constant game of hide-and-seek with multiple monsters, but this story does have it's good share of scares.

If you like your stealth, with no lantern, and discovery, this is a worthy download. If you're a fan of the TV show, like me, I'd give it a full 10 out of 10. If you're not a fan of the show, or never watched it, the story is still worthy to play though you won't get the references and full story, but is still a well deserved 9 out of 10.

You can see me play through the story, only culminating to one of the endings possible, over on my YouTube channel:

Midgaard

Mod review may contain spoilers

Very highly rated Half Life 2 horror mod.

Would say needs some more work to raise ambient horror for the player but on the whole excellent use of sound, environment, lighting and characters. The developer says the mod needs some more polish but I feel the game needs only a very little polish as in it's current form it's certainly playable.

Having the environment change right in front of you is disorientating but I LOVE it. Keeps you guessing and wondering where to go. And finding a key as a graspable object and physically taking it to a door is a nice touch. This mod is the first time ever I've seen that mechanic implemented.

A well deserved 8 out of 10. Would be higher if more ambient horror is included and a slight geometry glitch in the map close to the start needs fixing.

DOWNLOAD NOW, but keep an eye on that door you've just passed.

MINER'S PARANOIA

Game review

Use of textures is good but has lack of lighting effects which can dampen the horror atmosphere. Creature sounds are generic however this game is in alpha build as I write this so hopefully the game will be updated.

Miner's Paranoia's puzzles are very difficult though. The first puzzle has a huge issue but I will not spoil it for my review, I'll let the developer decide whether to publish that information publicly.

Did give me a couple of jumps. It's not the most frightening game out there but it's certainly no where near the worse.

Lurk the Horror Game

Game review

Good short horror game. Good ambience however some jump scare sounds are looped and it's not easy to find all objectives.
