Ace of Spades

Game review

It's amazing how much fun you can get in 2012 from 16 megabytes. This game stands proof of how a small twist in an already strong concept can turn the ship in a new, fresh and exciting direction.

So what exactly is in the box? Not much.

You have graphics that could be easily intimidated by Wolfenstein 3D, you have 2 identical teams (blue and green - from what I've seen, blue wins the people's choice award)trying to steal each other's intel briefcase (or snatching each other's territories), simple models, only 3 weapons, no vehicles and the ability to dig and build like in minecraft (no crafting)and barren maps that are either flat or filled with various forms of terrain (plains, hills, rivers).

In spite of all that, you end up playing a game that never gets old. The selling point of this game is that its sandbox nature. The simplified minecraft system makes sure that no two matches are the same, and the more you play the more you get a hang of the various tactics and workarounds you can use to get the edge over your opponents. From tunneling and building bunkers, towers, forts and what-not to the pure pleasure you get from seeing an enemy structure topple (blocks have the nice habit of not floating in the air, so if you manage to destroy a building's foundation, the rest will crumble). You shouldn't forget however that it's still an objective-based shooter, so don't start recreating Minas Tirith because it will all go away after one of the team wins.

The best part is that the game forces players to work together. The shooter part of the game is simple. Since you can't sprint, use vehicles or funky weapons and have only 1 med-kit at your disposal, you are forced to rely on your mates to get you out alive from a firefight. So there's a natural co-op spirit that sets in after a while.

So, if you have time or friends to kill, or just want to practice your burrowing skills, this is a game that you shouldn't miss.
