I would to say that the Ukrainian developers gave us in three years an engine that other developers cannot beat even in the next three years.
Especially with mods, this is unbeatable. No matter of SoC or CoP.
Fallout, Skyrim with ENB and Crysis a be an exception in that case of course. And I have played many games.
But it's very interesting how the devs of stalker NOT released the full potential of the X-Ray engine. I've never seen fog for example in vanilla SoC, neither in vanilla CoP and CS, or mutated cats, some hidden weapons, levels (if you go in the gamedata\configs\text\ folder you can see many text dialogs from levels who never made it ingame).
But on the other hand I know many Stalker gamer who started playing it only cause of the mods ;)
I have this game since release. Because of, the developers announced that the game would be modable.
And since Half Life, C&C and Oblivion we know how long such modable games can motivate. See Fallout or Skyrim.
But that was not the reason, the first trailer and game images are gave me the feeling and impression like: "I definitely must own this game".
The intensity and atmosphere simply knocked me out.
Oh my god this...bandit rookie texture looks great...and the envi as well, yeah.
Very nice textures.
