Hey, I got a little idea for handling config files, at least on Ubuntu. Ubuntu One, cloud storage service is what every Ubuntu user gets for free (with 2gb capacity + more for $). Canonical provides API for custom application, which can use that storage. Config files in cloud pros:
1) no need for worrying about backup
2) playing with your own config at any other computer with Ubuntu or Windows
3) ???
4) profit
