Call of Pripyat: Special Edition

Mod review

Meticulous work. You won't even notice just how many little things have been tweaked and adjusted unless you are very familiar with vanilla cop. Everything is seamlessly integrated, only adding to the vanilla experience, not trying to be it's own unique experience in itself.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Chernobyl

Mod review

I was skeptical about just how much base CoC, could offer. Beyond being a place holder for other mods. But I have to say, this is incredible work. The people responsible deserve all the accolades awarded to them. If you are on the fence about trying it, don't be. Its well worth it.

Game review

I really like this game, and I can see it being popular amongst coders and *nix users alike.
There is something called an alias, that at the moment behaves more like a macro. You can bring up a note pad and type in a sequence of commands divided by a semicolon, these are called from an alias you give them, thus the name.

--ex. truck = navigate 3 1; tow 3; navigate 3 r1; tow 3

This is an alias I'd use to call my tow drone to my explorer and pick up a ship upgrade or other retrievable salvage.

They are already fun and full of potential in their current state, but the developers are keen to flesh this system out adding variables and delays for starters. The syntax is simple (a little like tcl, partly because it's not esoteric, or overly complex but is still powerful.. mainly though because you're typing one liners, of commands seperated by semi colons.. just.. like.. in tcl :D).

There is a tutorial and starter galaxy but they just cover the basics and from there you are on your own. They have said that they don't want everything made clear and the intention is to have players discover mechanics through playing, reading logs and experimenting.

Aliases, as an example, were originally a text file in the games folder with no explanation.

The developers really care about making this as good a game as possible, while not trying to cater to a low common denominator.

At the moment the community is somewhat niche but robust and I only see it growing.

Great devs pushing boundaries with a great game that seems to attract some really great, intelligent people.. Can not recommend enough.
