For other Linux/Mac users there is this thread. I couldn't test any of this because it is for the linux version of MTW2 on steam, which I don't have, yet.

I think I am gonna just buy the linux version that was recently released, see if that works, instead of trying to force my windows copy to work.

Its just weird. It will be a few weeks, but when I get the linux version I will update my little adventure with this mod.

This is the *only* windows game I miss playing. So, thank you COW devs, you guys made something so neat that I might actually end up being motivated enough to become a second rate hacker before this adventure is over. ;)

Peace

Ugh. My project is retardedly complicated.

Ever notice how things are always so simple in your head as concepts but implementation is insanely complex?

Gah, I know nothing, and the more I learn the more ignorant I feel.

Okay, decompiling the patch.exe it is. Hoping that whatever changes you made I can manually apply to the medieval & kingdoms .exe's - if not no biggie, I gotta learn how to decompile stuff anyway.

Neat trick, I poured gasoline on a puppies butt and it took off like lightning and did about 30 laps around the house before keeling over in its tracks, and I thought it had died.

However, upon closer inspection, I discovered that it had just run out of gas.

To the pound with you! Bring the Beginning of the End Times to all those adorable doggie-things!

Well, for starters they have to re-write the entire mod to be compatible with linux so I can play without having to debug/work the stuff out my own damn self, so, sorry, because of linux skaven the rest of you have to wait another year or so.

But don't worry, after a year actually passes you'll have so much fun playing you won't even remember to hate me. ;-P

@Creators; I got MTW2 + Kingdoms working great. However, I am having troubke running the v1.1 patch.exe in Wine, so the kingdoms and medieval.exes are not getting updated.

Im totally new at linux, but found a kewl link that had instructions for getting TATW mod running under linux (but they also used steam whereas I have actual windows gold edition cd's). I might try getting that mod to run first and then apply knowledge to cracking botet problem.

Is there a better forum I could discuss this with you on?

Assuming I get it to work I will be more than happy to send you whatever info you need.

I'm documenting each step I take, so hopefully I can make it happen.

Last night I screwed up my MTW2 install so re-attempting to enable v1.0 today.

OMG! You guys has riots and elitist subversion, communist bashing capitalist crucifying discussions, some khornites got purged, kittens were sacrificed, and references were made to Duke Nukem and Half Life 3; and I only made it to page 5!

Good grief, no wonder the mod hasn't been released yet!

Well nothing good humor and ample karma can't fix.

Btw, any other peeps out there running MTW2:COW on linux or am I the lone frontiersman here?

What is this? I am gone for over a week, abandoned windows os for Ubuntu then abandoned ubuntu for Linux Mint, learned how to run wine, got MTW2 to work great for mint, am now installing CoWv1.1 and gonna try an run that and *still* no version 2?

The Horned Rat won't be pleased...

Oh, and this is that skaven guy checking in. ;)

Cool beans! Skaven are my fave faction so far.

Look out for the backstab by the CD, though. It will happen. Good Luck on your campaign!

PS Oh, the packmaster is a lore character, gnawtooth I think. You can get info on him from wiki.

I used it successfully as a backup leader while building up another general alongside.

He raises morale of nearby units, which is important early on (after you get 8+ star general morale doesnt seem to matter as much).

He is kinda like a skaven commissar.

I also recommend you invest in a Kennal early on so you have access to "small rats". Build a stack with about 10 of those (they are very cheap), a general, a packmaster, and misc slave rats and you will be surprised with what you can kill.

Tarpit with either SR or slaves, depending on who you are fighting, and then hit flanks and rear (SR are quick!).

Also SR can tarpit on walls, which is handy in specific siege battles.

crap, ld;dr answer. sorry. ;)

Well, I am all set to make the big transition from the much <justifiably> maligned windows os to linux (ubuntu). Is anyone else using linux to play mtw2:cow or am I about to embark on a dark and foreboding journey into the unknown?

Yikes! In my new Reikland game the Brets got destroyed on turn 24!!!

Skaven and VC slaughtered all their family members, maybe?

Thanks all!

Heh, had MTW2 since it came out and I do not remember ever encountering this one before - must be because I am checking out all the cool Empire buildings.... makes sense.

Kind regards for the info - I was worried I might have made a mistake during assembly and wasnt looking forward to having to break it down to the motherboard again lolz!

I know the new patch has lots of fixes, I am only asking this question because I just assembled my first laptop and I have encountered a problem that I also experienced on my old laptop when it was overheating; As Reikland the campaign map graphics get screwy with pictureds interposing in the wrong places, buttons getting assigned unit pics, etc.

What I need to know is if this is a known bug or if the problem is with the laptop I just assembled?

Thanks!

I am sorry, gwa1hir. I was a little too aggressive in my reply.

You have every right to like what you want, for whatever reasons you choose. I need to check my hostility towards something that a lot of reasonable gamers enjoy.

After reflection on what got me so passionate, I realized that is because, when I buy a game I want to have an enjoyable experience, not be left feeling like a sucker.

And that is what I feel like when I buy a game only to find out I can't have the experience I expected without purchasing additional content. Even if the dlc/patches/updates/expansions are reasonably priced, it still irritates me.

That being said, you seem like a decent fella who was just expressing his opinion and personal tastes, and I had no right to jump on you.

Empire also has issues, yes. It was a disappointment on launch, but the modders eventually redeemed it.

I agree with, of course. I would rather pay more for a complete, better game at launch than a excessively buggy partial game that requires 6+ months of dlc and patches to be a solid gaming experience.

Dude, you know what forum this is right?

The creators of this submod put more heart and life in this game than CA put into the entirety of TW:W, and it shows despite the bugs in this mod. Granted my direct knowledge of TW:W is about 4 hours total, but that game didnt suck me in like this mod does!

Both games have issues, but this mod just feels more sincere and legit. The fact that the CoW patch isnt out yet actually shows just how much the devs care about the quality of their product.

CA just isnt on that level anymore - Rome 2's retarded state at launch proves that; and so does this dlc policy they have taken too.

Not me, tbh. I am totally against this over-used dlc crap. I don't mind spending $60 - $80 on a good game, but I want a complete game. Don't sell me a game for $50 that is only half done and then expect me to pay another $50 for dlc.

It annoyed me with Shogun 2 and I never bothered to pick up Rome 2; and I owned every previous Total War title since the OG Shogun within a week of launch.

Don't get me wrong, Shogun 2 is a great game, but I detest the dlc business model as it eventually seems to degen into the consumer paying for what amounts to gameplay and graphic patches.

To each his own. A friend bought it and I played it. It was fun, cool, but not worth more than $60 as a complete game.

I'll wait 2 or 3 years until they have some sort of main game+all dlc+expansions deal.

Then I'll skip the original game and just play awesome mods! ;)

Awwww man!

So I was sleeping, and I had a dream! I dreamed that the latest version of this mod had been released and I was merrily skittering with my new skaven gunners while my small rats swarmed over chaos warriors and Felix and Gotrek were wrecking my slave-thing battle line and huge space stegadons with deathstar lasers were blowing up a chaos castle in the background.

I was trying to tell the Emperor on his flying griffon how cool this was but then he turned into Thanquol riding on Bonerippers shoulders and said; "Stupid man-thing you is dreaming not playing it! Now wake up and downloads it now!"

So, I woke up, got all excited, turned on my cpu, looked for the download and... got sad. :_(

... or they could just release a complete gaming experience on launch instead of expecting gamers to shell out more money for a "better map" "better graphics" and "better engine"; oh, and then charging extra for additional mainstream factions and units that, a decade ago, would have been included with the original game at release.

Just sayin.
