i think its because the battles are longer and the reason why cheap garrison units can beat elite attacking units in city assault is because of the battle lenght which the towers take advantage, the towers take most of the kills

BUG: Garrison units (even weak ones) can beat the hell out of those attacking units even the elite ones.

you said it, even Alexander the Great knew that his foot companion's pikes are not meant for killing because it has low penetration due to the Sarrissa's length that's why his Companion cavalry did all the enemy's routing. This is realistic unlike vanilla.

Undyed wool is typically a natural off-white color, thus requiring no effort to obtain nor maintain its homely shade. However, the pigment required to produce red dyed wool would have been more expensive and harder to procure in quantity. Red tunics would help to distinguish centurions in battle, and even conceal bloodstains. Purple, a traditionally royal hue requiring a frightfully expensive dye, seems most likely to have been reserved for the Emperor and his family. No evidence survives for use of other colors, although the possibility of BLUE and green tunics cannot be ruled out.
