I had the same problem ten years ago when I was 18, I had no art talent and the only programming skills I had was C++ with some knowledge of the windows api. I ended up reading a ton more books down the road, did a lot of web programming, creating things like the comment and profile system of this website although not as complex, and when it came to finally doing a game I keapt putting it off. Making a game was a head ache even now it is, dealing with the quirks of whatever programming language I'm dealing with (in the case of agartha I just ported it over to flash). I guess my advice is start small and build onto it, same with the sprites, if you don't have art talent make them small maybe in time you'll gain the skills needed to make larger ones (I at least hope I will.)

I swear to god it's not my fault! but yeah thats the general feeling, if I go through this again there will be a line of folks waiting to smack me.

thank you, my goal wasn't to be an authority on pixel art so much as just point people on what they should do if their graphic artist runs off. but if you want to become one the link at the end of the article is one of the best resources on the net.

Yeah, I've heard different versions, If I remember right Lemuria may have been where Madagascar is currently, it is said there were giant ape like beats living there or something insane. If you heard a different version I'd be interested to hear.

Honestly this is pretty good feedback, I'll keep it in mind for future levels and make any needed mods when I find a replacement look that's satisfying.

I thought I made a comment here, but I guess I'm crazy. I was going to say I thought it looked pretty decent, when your dealing with an NES you have a very limited amount of colors to work with, had most games went with what you did they would of looked a lot better. Theres not much you can do to not make it look busy, the NES had to reuse a little alot, but good examples would be zelda for nes, how many times do you run into that dam little tree? I could probably count the amount of tiles in that game on both my hands. Anyhow it looks pretty good, I love old school graphics.

Awesome game! I love the old school look of it, some of the best games were simple, I'm not a big fan of the 3D crap or the smooth Flash style 2D games. Guess I'm a sucker for the old 8-bit/16-bit styles

I love the sprites, my only complaint is the background, it doesn't match the general art style of the game, I had a similar issue with my own game, your style is a lot like my own. You could always take the same background and use a graphic program like gimp (photoshop should be able to do this too) and convert the image to an indexed image of 5 colors, and set the dither to positioned. In gimp you would go to Image -> Mode -> Indexed, set the colors to 5 or more and set dither to positioned.

Check out my game Agartha and look at the gradient background for an example; I tried to use a gradient but it didn't fit the look of my game, so I did what I suggested to you and got something that fits the look of my game.

Just a suggestion I don't want to intrude, other than that I love the sprite work!
