100 apm player here, i get obliterated in most sc1 player vs player matches and brought a 20apm friend (30-40 apm, we are at Bw Terran 5).
I would have to agree some missions are straight up: do something before minute 15 or you **** up. But the matter of the fact is that most of the "hard" missions can be easily countered by using not so complex strats and switching it up with unit comps to counter whats killing your base, i usually almost never max out my army in number and we got away with good positioning and learning the maps to kill the objective or maybe cheese it some way. You dont have to kill all their bases on the missions, just do objectives and smart planning ahead and you should be fine with anyone on your side.
Mod is fun and usefull, i do however suggest introducing your friend to Sc2 first because its just less of a hasle to learn and theen jump to Sc1, but it is doable!
