indeed this problem wasn't isolated to American Sherman's alone what made the Sherman a death trap was its ridiculous layout. Too tall, too many flat surfaces, and armor that was far too thin for the role of an actual main battle tank for the time.

It was woefully inferior to German Panzers no matter how you looked at it but again war is a numbers game and for every Sherman lost we could churn out another 5-6 to replace them.

That was the Sherman's only real advantage it was cheaper and easier to mass produce over its German opponents.

The Easy Eight version (as well as the 76mm) of the Sherman was more than a match for even the latest models of the Panzer IV and in some cases the Sturmgeshutz (under equal circumstances), one of the most common German Tanks even late in the war.

A common misconception of the Sherman was that it always brewed up when hit. This is attributed to the ammunition placement. Once "Wet" Ammunition Stowage was available the tendency for the tank to catch fire was all but gone.

And no, the Sherman's advantages over German Panzers were not just its numbers. Reliability, Mobility and Versatility are good examples.

I don't get the somewhat negative attitude you have towards American built weapons and equipment judging by your other comments.

Well between games and movies making american tanks look like tincans against German AT and armor and I guess people just think that German armor was superior in every possible way, cause blitzkrieg and Tigers and whatnot. And I guess if you feel like pushing it
("Insert Sarcasm Here" Russia won the war all by themselves and the T-34s were the perfect and best tank of the war with its perfect 45 sloped armor, nothing the Germans had could pierce it, its magical 76mm gun could take out any tank that existed. "End of Sarcastic Rant")
Ironically enough as I said games badly portray American tanks War Thunder does a reasonably good job with accuracy. The Shermans are more then a match against the Panzer III and IV. They're even superior in ways against the T-34s, for that 76mm gun isn't piercing the front of a Sherman anytime soon. Hell the bloody Jumbo Sherman's frontal armor can stop the "all-mighty" 88mm.
But really some people need to get off their high horse and read a book or two and be so quick to judge.

You're very correct there. Unfortunately, if movies were to accurately portray the Sherman tank as if it were realistically, then the movie might be labeled as "American propaganda".

In all honesty while the T-34 was a good tank, it is *enormously* overrated, especially by many people today who think it was *the best tank in the whole war*. Its only recently where the myths behind the Sherman Tank as well as the T-34 are being debunked but military documentaries are only slowly taking in this new information.

the ronson company only came up with that slogan in the 1950's.

the reason they were often found burned out is because the germans would keep shooting until it caught fire, to make sure it couldn't be recovered.

The early Shermans were okay when they went up against the Panzer IIIs and Panzer IVs. Although it's not like anyone had anything better since British Armor in Africa couldn't deal with them and the Soviets had to relay on Lend-lease to supplement their 57mm T-34s. The76mm variants and the HVSS upgrade made it a pretty formidable tank when sent up against the German heavy armor in mass, plus unlike the heavy over engineered Tigers, the Sherman can cross bridges. They can also 1 on 1 the T-34, but it comes down to who can fire the first shot.
