As the australian election comes to a close i have to agree with this :/
My faith in democracy as it is now is none existent. We have dug ourselves a deep hole which we cant simply vote our way out of. From people i have talked to from the U.K and U.S seem to share similar sentiments.
I leave you with my thought on this matter. The difference between are one party state and a two party state is the illusion of choice.
This is all personal opinion btw not fact. Just a tired mans ranting
Doesn't that petition and the newly elected governments opinion on that petition raise the question that the government no longer does the will of the people? (Assuming it ever did which could be up for debate) Anyways I don't live in Australia and this is based on Windspeed's comment on the LTT article about the reaction to the petition. Linustechtips.com
A two-party state is significantly better than a one-party state. Sure, nothing ever gets done, but who would we depend on to dig up useless personal BS about their political opponents?
In all seriousness, a one-party state pretty much always sucks because nobody, not even another useless political party, can raise legitimate opposition. We often get a choice between two very bland and similar options, yet it is ultimately still in our control, and totalitarianism can be avoided.
Personally, I wish that we could use the alternative vote ( Youtube.com ), it could erode two-party dominance.
Yup when the government openly ignores its people you know something isn't quite right :/
Alternative system works well in theory. I think it would work even better if there was not compulsory voting. But the average voter will still go for one of the big 2 parties. Over recent years we have seen a trend towards smaller parties getting more vote. Which gives hope but they're are still huge amounts of people are simply not being represented in parliament at the moment.
Still you are right the Alternative vote system is far better then nothing.
In Canada we have a bunch, but only 4 main ones: Conservative, Liberal, NDP and Green party. Thats the same pretty much for all of Canada except for Quebec which have a French Nationalist party. We have a bunch of other parties as well, but none of them really get votes. Also we have two communist parties, the Communist Party of Canada, and the Marxist-Leninist Party... Splitting the hopeless vote in two lol.

This is one of the shirts that TekSyndicate sells. According to Logan George said that a party system would ruin America, I cannot prove this with a quick Google search but I trust the guys over at TekSyndicate. Teksyndicate.com and if you really want to know why that shirt has that phrase on it ask Logan in the INBOX.EXE thread:D Teksyndicate.com
If this country had actual parties it may well fall apart, though I couldn't possibly care if Texas succeeded and would if given the opportunity support them fully in their decision to depart. Probably along with the sane portion of the country.

We have about 30 parties - you don't want that!

And sadly the Liberal and NDP parties split the leftist vote.
