I agree, this makes more sense than the current version of events. More heartbreaking, but more sense. Maybe bioware took it out so as to avoid completely crippling us emotionally as in the link above.

If I knew Harbenger would kill my squadmates in that assault I would have brought Ashley and Vega with me instead of Tali and Garrus. But maybe that's just me
