Have you noticed how sci-fi video games have been focusing on the theme of new world exploration? This was trending back in the late 80's / early 90's then somewhat died down. But now with games such as Star Citizen, No Man's Sky, Elite and indies' Rodina and EonWar, the push for a seamless space to planet transition has had a surge of interest and development in recent years.
Some might say this is due to the revival of the U.S. space program and the achievements of Elon Musk's SpaceX, rekindling our childhood imagination of visiting alien worlds. Other's might argue it's just a natural progression in gaming, but the question still remains, why is a seamless transition from space to planet just so badass?
It makes us drool with anticipation, a desire to travel between the stars and gauge an idea of size on a galactic level. There is nothing more dramatic than heading toward a small coloured blob against a black starlit backdrop, until it eventually gobbles your ship up to present a new world as far as the eye can see... littered with uncertainty and opportunity.
Visuals will always remain a secondary sense; Paul Workes Novagen's 1990 hit Damocles still inspires a sense of awe to those that can recall it's 8-bit charm!
Which game do you remember making your game-hand wobble when entering a new world?
