in those table top situations I always assumed the guardsman aimed between the gaps on the armor to make that possible IE bayonet through a gap followed by a mag "power pack" dump of las shots point blank.
Not "Power pack" they are called Hot-shots (Don't confuse them with Hellguns)
my bad tho tbh im more of an autogun kinda guy .... Say what you want about orks but I think they may be onto something when it comes to the concept of "more dakka" as heretical as that may sound :P
