Beautiful bro!

EDIT: I think I figured out what techniques/brushes you used! :)

No brushes, at least, not for adding anything to the picture. It's roughly the same technique as in the Ultimate GIMP Planet Tutorial.

You start out with a photo of your choice, edit it into the planet by merging different images (if you wish anyway, sometimes 1 source image is enough) then you add a lens effect, grey-scale it and copy it to a new image where you add the colors, atmosphere glow and hmm... maybe spaceships if that's something you like to add. I for example added the sun.

So the way I made this image was: I took an image of some trees, stretched it so you got the base texture, the flowing lines. Then I looked up some photos of those storm formations and pasted that in.
After that I added the lens effect, added color, the starry background and then the sun.

It's worth mentioning though I did this at work while being slightly bored, and not really paying attention, so it's far from perfect. xD

Ah wow, because I thought those storms were a galaxy brush, seeing as I have one just like it :P

Nope, the galaxy brush in my opinion is a little squarish... Never really used it myself.
