So... why didn't the fire nation attack from the sides? They'd have the high ground and it doesn't look all that dependable except for the large drop that they'd need to figure out how to get down from.
You clearly underestimate their power. :D North-en water-tribe would repel their attacks in an effective manner. And they're surrounded by water which gives them a distinctive advantage. I honestly think they'd use water-cannons and ice-projectiles to eliminate all fire-benders, vehicles and air-craft.
Fire-nation could simply use balloons, zeppelins or use their bending to fly around.
