They have no damage though, unless Plaguelords now have an upgrade so disease does damage.
Are they ranged?

Edit: I now see that the description box is describing the Ghoul, not the Tortured Soul, so I have no idea what they do.

In previous posts near pictures it was mentioned that tortured souls (then named red souls ) are related to dark elves and resource gaining. How exactly tortured souls work?

The Dark Elves have a new "racial" trait in which any unit they kill will spawn a "Tortured Soul" upon their death, similar to how Succubi work but this time it happens from ANY unit when playing as Dark Elves.

Tortured Souls are flying units which generate a certain amount of resources depending on the type of the soul - more powerful units will spawn more effective souls upon their death that generate more resources. There are 4 types available with Dragon souls being the most desired. (They also all look different or have tweaked visual effects to make them distinguishable.)

However, they generate resources for all 4 resource types, so the basic Tortured Soul generates 0.5 income to all 4 resources (gold, metal, stone and crystal). But 0.5 is less than a level 1 mine, so if you want some kind of respectable income that's equivalent to the weakest mine, you'll need to have at least 2 of these present.

Tortured Souls do disappear over time but can be attacked by enemy units to have them removed quicker.

In this particular screen shot that was taken during a multiplayer game, a few Dark Elven Sorcerers banished the Swarm to a place beyond hell with their newly modified Pillar of Fire spell that made VERY short work of the defending forces. So much in fact that it may need to be re-balanced (along with Call Lightning - but Goblin Shaman have been parading around with that for a while).

Call lightning makes Druids a valid unit, otherwise they are useless since Wood Elves already have a lot of ranged units.

I've been thinking about all this last night. Although Goblin Shaman have developed a nasty reputation since the very first version of the very first WBC game, which has resulted in constant nerfs to both them and Call Lightning, Druids on the other hand have not. This would suggest it was more of the synergy between Goblin Shamans and Call Lightning rather than just the spell.

The newly modified Pillar of Fire spell is pretty much a fire type Call Lightning now. In other words it's like vanilla Armageddon (which has been changed in 0.8.7). Although the spell's damage was lowered, it is considered more powerful than Call Lightning due to buildings being weak to fire and thus taking 150% damage from the spell. In addition to that, Sorcerers are both tougher and more powerful than Goblin Shaman, and even arrive earlier in the game. Finally, the Dark Elves have access to mane spell casting buffing spells, giving Sorcerers 300% mana regen and increased mana reserves. Overall, Sorcerers are essentially "uber Goblin Shaman" in their current state.

HOWEVER that's not the reason I'm pitching their spell to be looked into, but instead I think there has been something that was overlooked in the transformation from Pillar of Fire to Sunfall - and I'm pretty certain I know exactly what it is! When you have a just 6 Sorcerers and yet they have the power to kill 2 Dragons along with a titan and 2 full mobs of units with just the spell alone, then there's something more here than just high base damage.

Goblin Shaman are too spammable, they could use a cost and build time increase, perhaps alongside a range increase too, so they are still viable. I do agree that they are too efficient, specially when coupled with Ogres or Giants in the frontlines, because those tank a lot of damage.

The cause is a combination between giving units hero-power spells and Summon Mana being completely broken. We'll at least be looking into the latter for this version.

Maybe husks should replace skeletons for dark elves (would fit more to tomb full of spiders. Also husks look like tortured slaves more than skeletons, so husks would provide better support for tortured souls theme). What would you say? Thanks for response in advance.

I can reveal that in future the entire Gravestone building is getting replaced with another (probably for 0.8.8), which also means no more Skeletons for the Dark Elves. They'll be getting a different, mystery unit instead!
