Call of Pripyat takes you once again into the vicinity of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor that exploded in 1986. This so-called "Zone" is a highly contaminated area cordoned off by the military and now is combed through by the so-called stalkers, modern fortune hunters, in search of unique artifacts. In the role of Agent Alexander Degtyarev, who is dressed up as stalker, you have to investigate the mysterious disappearance of five military helicopters and thereby stand one’s ground against the various stalker groups.

Nice one, but i don't understand the kind of issue you faced.
Isn't the main zone's background (behind the detailed individual maps) has its own DDS file and can be easily replace? or there is more to it?

Problem was with resolution and fitting lines to every map.

Main map used as background(ui_global_map) was blurred even at 4096px resolution compared to those two maps. It sound as trivial thing, but in game it was just ugly.

Second problem was with fitting cartographic grid of every maps with those in background graphic. I could not fit them in any way and at the end it looked ugly, as some sticker on blurred paper.

Point was to replace normal satellite view to paper map and strip it from almost every marker(even player position would be removed or replaced with just big circle with text: "Im somewhere here...").

It was small side project that could be used by other moders, where I would even provide configs and other graphic to totally remove PDA from game and replace it with just two cards: map and second small open notes that show tasks.
I wanted to make it look good but all parts didnt fit to each other and I didnt had mood to start from scratch making it to work with all those limitations... :/

It's those little details that XRay restrict you from modifying what **** me off when it comes to modding.
Many of PDA's elements are pre-implemented deep in the engine and they can't be edited without reaching the core of it.

Anyway you did a nice job and concept, maybe someone will find a good use of it in the future.

Interesting, but too colourful. If make it black and white, more grungy, it would be more stalkerish.

Didn't you consider not making ui_global_map.dds with very big resolution. But with some gradients, to make it more schematic. It's like - we have a Zaton location on this map here, and "fog of war" around it. Edges of maps are needed only for stashes anyway.

P.S. May be you need some help? To make just good mod for PDA maps, why throw away your idea?

Yeah it is colorful but its a matter of 10 second to lower the colors :]
I always keep graphic with more colors, because its easier to reduce colors than add them later...

As for project it self... Well as I said in previous comment up. It was just an idea that ended after just those two maps because of annoying two bugs that throw me away from "mood to make it".
As for background graphic, yes I tried huge file that had resolution of 4096x8192px and weight almost 30MB and it was still blurred compared to maps(read = it was just ugly)...
You probably guess that this type of huge file is not best solution for such problem, especially in Stalker :]

As for idea of "fog of war". Original idea was to replace PDA with paper map, that background graphic would also have some roads and buildings market to look like real cartographic map made by stalker, not perfectly accurate, but with visible roads, buildings and other important places and grid. I had even friend who was ready to make script that would replace PDA with just that map and small notes with missions, but before that I would need all graphics ready... and because I could not fit grids and contrast between maps and background was to big I dumped that project.

Zip contain GIMP files with all layers of maps. Anyone is free to do what they like with it.
If you think you could finish it or do similar project using those graphics, feel free to do so. Im still not really in the mood to get back to it :/

I'm making marks of stashes on map as an option. And I saw that joke, when any marks on global map texture looks myopic. Many modders dream shatters on poor stalker's engine.

I've downloaded zip. May be will try to do something with maps. I'll credit you if will use your idea or stuff anyway.
