Sonic x-treme was supposed to be the 1st 3D official Sonic the hedgehog game that was planned to be released for christmas 1997 by Sega in cooperation with SEGA Technical Institue, development of the game ran through several difficulties and was carried from Mega drive to Sega x32 ending at Saturn when SEGA decided to drop the project and release a Polished edition of Sonic 3D blast for Saturn to fill the hole .

Sonic X-treme - Exploring Levels

Starting a mod Tutorial

Level list

Here's a list of files for some known levels, some of these levels are only included exclusively in the 3rd Release of v37 Engine , Mind you that this release will not run the levels from the PackageX Leak :

A - PackageX Leak :

  • JADE1 - Jade gully
  • JG_07 - Jade gully (a different version using different set of textures)
  • CRYSTAL1 - Crystal Frost
  • STAR08A - New paths
  • SAND4 - Red sands
  • GALAXY1 - Galaxy Fortress / Death Egg
  • DE_05G - Unknown level, possibly an early version of Metal Blade (only few blocks are textured)
  • DE_14E - Unknown level, possibly an early version of Metal Blade
  • TEST_05B - Unknown Egyptian-themed level (only few blocks are textured)
  • FERN_01 - Untitled Christmas level
  • AGUA5 - Untitled Underwater level

B - v37 Engine Release 3 Demo :

  • TEST_05 - Egyptian themed level (inside RSRC19)
  • DEMO03B - The Volcano tube level from the E3 Demo (inside RSRC19)
  • MB-03 - Necropolis (inside RSRC19)

Level Viewer (A.k.a SXEngine)

Instructions :

A - Running the viewer :

Download and extract the zip .
  1. Extract "SXLevelViewer" to wherever you want .
  2. Extract "PackageX" to wherever you want .
  3. Copy "SONICBOOM" folder to "Assets" folder inside "SXLevelViewer" folder .
  4. Open "Binaries" folder and double click "SX Engine.exe"

B - Changing level to view :

  1. Get a filename from the folder "SXLevelViewer\Assets\SONCBOOM\DEF" .
  2. Open "Config.ini" with "Notepad" .
  3. Change "Level to load == ???" to the level you want to load .
  4. Run "SX Engine.exe" and explore !!

Tips :

  • v3.1 and v3.2 Explorers are similar to SX Engine but not as smooth or accurate as SX Engine .
  • SX Engine is inside the folder "Binaries", the one inside "Assets" folder is likely going to crash .
  • Make sure to copy the "SONICBOOM" folder to the "Assets" folder .
  • Edit "config.ini" and change the filename for "Level to load" to any Level file you'd like to explore .
  • Always remember to not add .DEF at the end of the filename for Level to load .
  • You may find a list of levels files at "Assets\SONCBOOM\DEF" folder after copying SONICBOOM to "assets" folder of course .
  • Edit the ini inside the "Binaries" folder, and run "SX Engine.exe" from Binaries folder .
  • You can also change the screen size and mode from "config.ini" .
  • Make sure to update your graphics card driver and Install latest DirectX Version to make it work .

Known Issues:

  • SXEngine cannot fully emulate slopes or "pathways".
  • Sanik's v3.1 and v3.2 viewers cannot render actors with proper animations, and may also fail to render some slopes properly, and like SX Engine it also cannot emulate pathways.
