Omicron Sector is a tactical roguelike RPG. It is set in the new Star of the Empire setting. Major inspiration comes from not only roguelike games but Starflight, Star Control, tactical RPGs, and the various X-COMS.

There is a Kickstarter to help make this a reality. Link is below:

This game can't happen without your support.

GAME MECHANICS

When the game begins you and your crew are dumped into an unknown environment, cut off from all support. The area must be scouted and explored but you will have limited power to fuel your ship. Equipment will need to be scavenged from the area and cobbled together into whatever you can make out of it. Of course some of the best bits will be in the hands of bandits, rogues, and hostile militaries. Your squad will need to fight through turn-based battles if you are to get the best stuff. Of course while you are scavenging they may bring the fight to you.

You will need to budget your energy well. Though you can synthesize most basic materials you will need, including food for your crew, this can be quite expensive to do. Will you use your power to travel or will you use it to keep a big crew with a variety of skills?

THE STORY SO FAR

Humanity has always looked up at the stars and wondered what was out there. Eventually we managed to slip forth into space. Not long later an infinite energy source was discovered, later named The Star of the Empire. Nobody was sure how it was built, how it worked, who had built it, or why. All anybody knew was that scarcity would soon be a thing of the past; with infinite energy we had infinite resources. Humanity thrived; science, art, and exploration flourished thanks to the Light of the Star. A great empire grew and humanity spread further and further throughout the galaxy, leaving marvelous scientific wonders in their wake.

These included the Trade Gates; massive structures capable of opening stable, safe wormholes across vast distances. Even travelling the stars no longer took much time and effort. That is, until the Star went dark. The assumption of infinite power was the foundation of society. Without it everything crumbled. Infrastructure rusted and collapsed from neglect. The old ways came back and with them conflict, war, exploitation, and want.

Centuries passed; the glory days of the Empire became a distant memory. Humanity, ever resourceful, began to rebuild. Eventually somebody figured out how to temporarily awaken one of the old gates, though only briefly. Most of them were non functional, some broken down for scrap. The gate to Omicron Sector however was mostly in one piece. A plan was put into place to send through a small, sturdy ship and a small, sturdy crew.

This is where you and your crew come in; you will be cut off from all support once through the gate. Your ship is small and poorly equipped as little could be sent through. Fragile technology was impossible as was more than four people. You must choose your crew carefully and use every resource you can find to complete your mission. Your primary task is to reactivate the gate. It will not be easy.

There are still humans living in the area but many of them have taken to piracy and banditry. There are also the ruins of civilization that may be picked through for what technology can be dug up. The question there however is how will you power it? Many of the machines were built with the assumption of infinite power. You do not have access to such things. Perhaps there are other ways.

Of course there are...other problems in the area. The availability of infinite energy meant that the very fundamental building blocks of life could be experimented with. Some of the old experiments not only survived but are thriving in the area. With centuries to improve themselves what have they been getting up to?

Can you survive in the ruins of an advanced civilization or will the trade gates remain dark and closed?
