This game is based on the Escape Velocity series from AmbrosiaSW.
Hence the name NAEV, meaning Not Another Escape Velocity.
I played the first EV about 16 years ago and it was addicting as hell.
Played the others too and it's so addictive.
This game is pretty much the same even has a bit more.
I really recommend trying this out.

Near as I can tell, the system it self could be modded... It is open source after all. Why not try to make it yourself?
