I sadly still get the feeling, that it is somehow...flatly artificial :/ Unfortunately,I´m afraid, this is a matter of the game engine and I doubt you could change this... But hell´ye, it´s still nicer than any pirate simulator out yet! Not even mentioning troubles with the old engine...

I agree , although this Engine has many capabilities so it may be possible to have a more realistic look !

I think it's one of best I see (graphics perspective) so there may be solution out of these artificial feeling ;)

The materials and lighting still need some work, so this isn't final quality yet. I suspect you'll see a marked improvement once Unity 5 releases, too, so watch this space.

Indeed this here is a very simple test. We'll be doing more work on this to be sure.

We are currently using base shaders until we have our own lighting systems ironed out. We also don't want to muddy the optimization waters while working on the ocean and buoyancy systems and have other major systems causing fps issues that aren't related to that exact system.

It isn't that those shaders aren't being worked on, because they are, but they will not make it into the current screenshots for now until they have been incorporated into the test build or are posted from that separate project.

Another contributing factor is that we are not using any camera effects other than AA, and even that is turned down very low. Once we have the shaders in the project it will come to the point of adding in tone mapping, better AA, AS filtering, vignetting, chromatic aberration, depth of field, etc.
