No, not quite. This planetoid is made of 9 big fragments. Each one of these will have resources, but most likely only on the inside. The plan is that the player will have to crack open the planetoid to get to the resources.
The image shows a partly assembled planetoid with 3 fragments missing.
So far I was thinking cracking open the planetoid works through weapon fire or some tech, which then results in having the planetoid explode aka move all fragments apart. Maybe an alternative approach would be to just work on a single fragment and extract this one, keeping the rest intact. This would then give you pretty much the image above in-game.
Planet crackers inbound!. Your tech solution could be a late game ship that is able to remove each fragment one at a time. the resulting fragment would have to be completely mined before the ship can remove a new piece.
it could be both. maybe an early tech could be a type of base you build on it or something. then a later tech you just get something to blow the planet up and you get the chunks and more resources quicker then a late game tech would be riping it apart and processing it piece by piece. then you get even more materials in the long run because you dont lose any from just blowing it up.
Soooo...I'm fully expecting Planetoid mining operations. :3
Either shoot a high explosive mining missile at it and collect its debris...or a mining base on top of it.
Either way, something of the sort I hope :3
So I am assuming all the good stuff was on THAT side of the dead space rock? Hence the missing chunk?

watch out for mysterious marks however
