the game starts out during world war II when you play as an american "spec-ops" team. that's why there's a thompson there. there is also an japaneese smg and an M1 Garand.
It's not an M1 Grand because you take it from the Japanese.Also, an M1 grand clicks loudly when you reload it.

In multi player, there is an M1 Garand. You just need to be a Battlefield Veteran.
makes no sense to bring one of those to modern combat, but nonetheless it's flippin' awesome
