They were probably boasting about what the player can be and you can be a murderer.
Well that makes it even creepier. "Sneak into some poor woman's room and murder her on her bed!" doesn't look good on the back of a box. Trust me.
Well it is an RPG. Some people want this type of freedom.
It was the rituals carried out by the worshippers trying to bring back the dark god of something.
Nah. They kill chickens and cut off their heads as part of their rituals. Though I once did see a human with his head cut off in one of their bases. The ritual to bring Akbaa to the world is actually performed in a different way and doesn't require sacrifices. The worshipers just liked murdering.
