During the Vietnam War, no side lost more than the South Vietnamese, many of whom emigrated to America and other countries after Saigon was taken by North Vietnam in April 1975. Over a quarter of a million ARVN troops were killed during the conflict, with hundreds of thousands more captured.
Not only did the ARVN lose the war: they lost their whole country and were forced to assimilate into either new countries or the new communist-led Vietnam.
Here's our tribute to the brave men and women of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), who fought valiantly against the equally brave men and women of the North Vietnamese Army and Vietcong.
Often portrayed as inept, corrupt and cowardly, the ARVN actually fought well until their final defeat in 1975, even repelling a full-scale North Vietnamese invasion in 1972. Their courage was best exemplified by the Battle of Xuan Loc, where ARVN Brigadier General Le Minh Dao’s 18th Division stopped North Vietnam for two full weeks before finally being overwhelmed.
In this segment, we'll see a full company of ARVN infantry, bolstered by elite 'Biet Dong Quan' rangers and M41 light tanks, trying to retake a war-torn village held by the North Vietnamese during the 1972 Easter Offensive.
The Nam : Vietnam Combat Operations and its Wider War expansion pack allows players to command regular and elite ARVN forces – including marines, rangers, paratroopers, aircraft and armored units.
Unlike most Vietnam War games which tend to glorify Americans, The Nam rightfully portrays all sides as heroes fighting for their respective causes.
The Nam : Vietnam Combat Operations is a nonprofit real-time strategy game released by Filipino videogame programmer 𝗧𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗬𝗮𝗻 in 2020 to promote interest and enhance education about the Vietnam War.
