why can't archers and crossbowmen go into loose formation anymore?

You were right, but I may quote the Real Combat guidelines: '***Crossbows do not have an open formation - this prevents them wasting time adjusting to incoming fire due to their slow reload animation***'

Alright, normally they should be able to get into loose formation. Of what archers do you speak in particular?
sorry for late reply but yeah, i was doing a seige battle when i cant do loose formation. turns out to be a pathfinding issue, normally then can go into loose formation
so no problems in that regard

A good question. Well, we will now finish the stats for the AoR units, as well as, their unit cards and unit info cards. Next we implement all strat map characters for the newly added factions. After that we will implement all new units into our building system (Question is here, if we overhaul the recruitment buildings or not). When we are done with that, we will re-implement all scripts and events from the previous versions. That will take some time because we need to adjust all the coordinates etc. Then we will add in all new planed scripts. Last but not least, testing, testing, testing and then you'll have the release.
As you can see there is still a considerable pile of work in front of us :D
Therefore it is hardly possible to nail it down on an exact date, though we hope to get it done this year. Problem is simply the lack of manpower and not unsolved issues. As you can see our current team have only two people. I am afraid you have to be patient :)
wow i admire your patience! well do not rush, i have so high expectations of this mod! Take as much time as you need, as i have seen you really try to do serious work

This a complete standalone, though no full campaign version.
You'll only be able to play custom and quick battles. We released this version in hope to receive some feedback for our newly added balancing system.
In one file no, you will have to extract it and then run the .exe file.

personally i think the guns in the new version are a tad too op. (33 damage for ottoman jannisaries and long range meant half of my army evapourated before reaching them. additionally why an i only allowed to purchase only one unit of venetian heavy infanry before the extra cost kicks in?
As for the overpowered guns, we have already fixed this issue. So you you will have a more realistic damage rate in the final game :)
Hi, you made an entertaining mod, but just one correction, please could you make a patch to change the texture of the spanish flags? It should be this kind of flags: these for infantry ( 4.bp.blogspot.com AND Upload.wikimedia.org ) and for cav ( Radioamlo.org)
(these are the flags, shields,banners etc of the age of the Catholic Kings) because the flags of the mod(I mean the flag who carries the flag bearer of each spanish unit)are from the current flag and shield of the Spanish Democracy of 1975 and nowadays. No, this is a standalone. Just keep in mind this is a battle beta, you will only be able to play custom and quick battles, not the campaign.
