Update H3SW v0.8.1 beta. Requires clean Heroes 3 SoD or Heroes Complete to play. Partially compatible with Heroes 3 HD Mod by baratorch. See download description for installation instructions.
Installation of H3SW v0.8.1 beta:
- Download H3SW v0.8.1 installer.
- Unpack the modification to the game (Heroes 3: SoD or Heroes Complete) directory.
- Launch h3sw.exe for the game and h3swmaped.exe for the map editor.
HD Mod: Installation and Settings
Heroes 3: The Succession Wars Mod is partially compatible with HD Mod. Users who prefer HD Mod can install it over H3SW v0.8.1 and enjoy many of its features. Note that:
- HD Mod must be installed over the game+H3SW chain. If you mess up the installation order, you will have to do some more additional actions to fix the situation. See below.
- To adjust HD Mod settings you need to find the era.ini file:
/Mods/The Succession Wars 0.8.1/_HD3_Data/Settings/era.ini
To change the in-game resolution from 800х600 to a desired one and to change the HD Mod graphics mode, you will need to manually change the lines and . IMPORTANT: changing these settings in the HD Mod Launcher will not do anything!
- Recommended HD Mod Settings:
= from 800х600 (native) to 1440х900 (depends on your monitor width). You also can experiment with the resolution, but keep in mind that too many bright elements on the screen will not be comfortable for playing.
= 2 (32 bit GDI) or 0 (16 bit). You also can try other modes, but we do not recommend using 32 bit True because it leads to problems with in-game fonts display and causes instability in the game.
= 0. Do not turn on system cursors! They lead to instability of the game on some computers.
- HD Mod Tweaks
Players who are used to can try to turn this tweak back on, but be warned that some in-game messages in H3SW v0.8.1 are not optimized for it. Due to all in-game messages being different from vanilla Heroes 3, we recommend at least to check them out :)
Other tweaks are not recommended for changing.
- HD+
Currently, the HD+ functionality is not accessible for the ERA platform due to the decision of HD Mod creator. Be warned that there will be no online lobby, fast army management or other newest mechanics of HD Mod. We sincerely hope that the situation will change in future.
- Launching H3SW+HD
To launch H3SW+HD Mod you will need to use the HD Launcher or to create an HD executable with it for the h3sw.exe file. WARNING: launching the game with standard h3sw.exe can lead to crashes on some computers, so use the HD Mod executable instead.
Experienced users: Installation of H3SW in the same folder with HotA and/or HD Mod
If you are not afraid of possible problems, you can try to install H3SW v0.8.1 in an already existing HoMM3 directory. However, be warned that the abovementioned modifications all contain conflicting versions of the patcher_x86.dll file. If you install H3SW over everything, you will have to update HD Mod accordingly in order to have all 3 modifications working properly. Uninstallation of HotA or HD from the game directory leads to the deletion of patcher_x86.dll and leads to the necessity of re-installing H3SW.
IMPORTANT: if you encounter a critical bug (crash) and wish to let us know of it, please specify your installation order. Currently, we are not 100% aware if HotA and H3SW can be installed in the same game folder without problems.
IMPORTANT: Automatic uninstallation of H3SW v0.8.1 is currently impossible. This is why we still recommend using a separate game directory to avoid possible problems.
not sure what to do with the era.ini file.. all i changed was the graphic..instead of that i did anything correctly but still,,, after some turns game show some error message and then crash.. i'm sure i need to do something with the era.ini file... but i don't know cuz the readme isn't explain too good for me:x.

You don't need to do much with the file. Describe your installation. Did you use a new Heroes 3 directory for H3SW v0.8.1?
I've noticed some weird behavior with the Green Dragon map dwelling on A Viking We Shall Go! (near Sarajevo): unlike all the other Dungeon towns, Moscow doesn't get the +1 bonus for dragons. I'm not sure if this is a bug or some intended behavior for this map.
Please send me a savegame so that I can check the issue.
Also, please specify the mod version you are playing on (v0.8.0 or v0.8.1). In v0.8.1, there shouldn't be such bugs.

Sent. I thought at first it may be due to Black Tower being only present in the problematic town, but I did try upgrading the Green Towers in the other ones and they still kept the growth bonus.

Another bug in Warlock, Magic Well seems to work one time only as of now.
We are still looking into it. People also reported similar issues.
Concerning the Magic Well, are you sure you did reproduce the conditions of H3 Mana Vortex to refill your character again?

The word "unpack" is misleading. I copied the file "H3SW_v0.8.1_Installer.exe" into my Heroes 3 map and right clicked on the file choosing "unpack here" as it if were a RAR file...
That doesn't work. You have to x2 click on the file "H3SW_v0.8.1_Installer.exe" and INSTALL it the Heroes 3 folder, not UNPACK it.

Well, you are the first user who was confused by the description. The v0.8.1 installer is a WinRAR SFX file, so it is, technically, unpacked with internal WinRAR scripts.
I will, however, change the word for better convenience of the users.

You were not supposed to install v0.8.1 over v0.8.0. The instruction says that you need a clean version of Heroes 3.
There is a way to fix things however. Just delete the Mods folder in your Heroes 3 directory, install H3SW v0.8.1 again and install HD Mod after that.
Note that HD Settings now have to be changed in a special file in the Mods folder! See v0.8.1 installation instructions.

Yes. Try connecting via TCP/IP or install GameRanger. The latter option would require some more actions though.

You were supposed to install over clean game. Delete the Mods folder and re-install H3SW v0.8.1.
Previous release didnt work on win 10 but this one is launching without any problem, so at last Im gonna play it:) Btw. are there some cheat codes like for exmaple in H3 SotD was "NWCTHECONSTRUCT" to gain 100k gold and 100 of each resources?
You need to use WoG cheats instead in v0.8.1. However, don't use wogminastirith, because it will break your game.

Hello, I installed this and the HD mod but when I set the resolution to 1920x1080 and start H3SW from the HD launcher the game will always reset to 800x600 resolution making it impossible to see anything on a widescreen TV. Am I missing something?

Hello. You cannot use anything from Steam to install this mod. You require a retail version of Heroes 3: Shadow of Death or Heroes Complete.

The game you bought in Steam is a completely different one: you have Heroes 3 HD from Ubisoft. No mods are working with it.
When I try and make a random map a bunch of error notifications show up and no map is made.
Do you mean random map in the game itself, or in the Map Editor? The latter is currently malfunctional in this sense.

You will need to check the installation order. Obviously, you did something wrong. Make sure you have this order:
1. Install clean Heroes 3 SoD or Heroes Complete (we recommend the official version from GoG.com)
2. Install H3SW v0.8.1 by launching the installer executable you can get here in the Download section.
3. (optional) Install the latest version of HD Mod by baratorch.
4. Play

The only way currently known to us is almost the same as with vanilla Heroes 3.
First, make sure you and your playmates have EXACTLY the same contents of their Heroes 3 folder, so that the game version and mod version are identical. It's likely you will need to have the similar map lists and such.
Second, back up Heroes3.exe somewhere on your computer (you can simply rename it to something like "Heroes3original.exe".
Finally, rename h3sw.exe to Heroes3.exe and try to launch Gameranger as if you are launching a vanilla Heroes 3 game.

Your situation sounds new to us. Please elaborate on how you installed the mod, which was the version of your Heroes 3 game, and where did you get it.
Well, First time I installed ERA II in a copied wog file, which it gives me wog and Succession wars mod. Later, I read that it must be installed at with Heroes III Sod, so I installed my full version (with SOD), without installing wog, but ERA II installs wog by itself, so I have wog at my ERA II
Obviously there is something else behind the bug.
I don't know what is "your full version of the game with SoD". Could you explain in a little more detail? There are only 2 versions of HoMM3 suitable for the mod:
- Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Shadow of Death
- Heroes of Might and Magic III: Complete Edition.
That's how they are called officially.
Installation order:
1. Install a CLEAN Heroes 3 Complete (GoG) in a separate folder. Try choosing a different disk partition (not C: where your system files are located).
2. Install H3SW v0.8.1 in this folder.
3. Launch h3sw.exe.
4. Report if the problem remains.

Try installing the game + mod in a different directory (preferably, not disk C:). If this doesn't help, please proceed to our official forums so that we can fix the issue.

Might be your antivirus. The v0.8.1 installer is a WinRAR self-extracting archive, so this is a rather common situation. Your choice.
This is hands down the best mod I've ever seen.
I never liked how Heroes 3 looked and you guys just single-handedly made it look like New World Computing had just continued with the same graphics style as they used in the previous games.

There is a difference, but perhaps the contrast is too low for people who are used to playing standard SoD with HD Mod. We may also implement a more sophisticated speed control in future updates.

No, HD Edition is in fact a separate game and not Heroes 3 anymore. No mod is compatible to that except potmdehex's HD Edition patch.
