Fanmade patch of the forklift to use the new func_vehicle entity from the 25th Anniversary Update of Half-Life.
On 17th November 2023, Valve released the 25th Anniversary Update for Half-Life, which ported func_vehicle from Counter-Strike into Half-Life.
Since USS Darkstar runs on vanilla Half-Life codebase, the same entity is available to it, so I figured I'd change up the old forklift setup from being a train running on an invisible predetermined path to actually be a driveable vehicle.
This is a fanmade patch. It is not endorsed by the original devs.
Requirements
You must run this on the 25th Anniversary (HL25) branch of Half-Life. Yes, the old Steam port of USS Darkstar is compatible with the HL25 branch as is. It might be missing the background as of writing but it will run the maps with no issues.
If you have customized the Steam UI files such as the game menu (resource/GameMenu.res) or the scheme files (resource/TrackerScheme.res) from the pre-HL25 branch, you need to revert those changes. Otherwise it'd be incompatible with the HL25 branch and will crash the game.
Installation
- Download the patch archive.
- Browse to your USS Darkstar folder (usually <Steam Library>/steamapps/common/Half-Life/darkstar/)
- Create a folder named "maps" inside that folder if it doesn't already exists.
- Extract the file zoology4.bsp from the archive to the maps folder.
- Start the game. Get into the forklift and crush those headcrabs!
