If your main criticism is that it's bound to A, that can be easily changed. Instructions are in the readme file. (Basically, just open the file 'KEYCONF' with any text editor and change 'defaultbind a' to defaultbind whatever you want. KEYCONF is a file within the pk3 archive.)
If your main criticism is that the widget is unnecessary, that's fine. Personally I find it useful.
As far as the keys I use to play, I use the mouse to move, aim and fire, and with my left hand I use V/B to strafe left and right. Other keys I may use are in that area so "A" was just nearby and worked for me.
Thanks for the directions on how to change default binding, most of us play with WASD for movement so A kinda ***** that up. This is actually a very useful mod since hazmat suits are essential to beating certain maps, and toggling on/off can help preserve it:)
It works just like the cheat code "IDBEHOLDR" except you only have to hit "A". You can turn it on or off as often as you wish and you don't need to grab it first. That said, just like normal play, the radiation suit will run out after a minute or two. You'll then have to hit "A" again to reactivate it.
Seriously dude? Why did you even make this? "A" to switch on off? Please don't tell me you play with Arrow Keys.

What would be a better key for it?
Just a pro tip, you can very easily add the key to the options/controls menu by doing something like this:
addkeysection "Flashlight" FlashlightSection
addmenukey "Toggle Flashlight" toggleflashlight_bind
alias toggleflashlight_bind "pukename ToggleFlashlight"
defaultbind J toggleflashlight_bind
(That was taken from my flashlight mod, you will have to adapt it. The line you want is the "addmenukey" one)
Then nobody will complain about it being bound to A again, they can just go and rebind it in the options menu
