Tired of watching NPCs try and aim an SVD at a mutant that is right on their feet? This addon tries to fix that with a small script that makes NPCs pick appropriate weapons in close quarters.
Close combat is defined as 5 meters.
Melee range is 1 meter.
In close combat NPCs will prioritize weapons as such:
- Shot guns.
- Melee (if in melee range)
- Anything that is not a sniper or launcher. (aka Pistols and Automatic rifles)
- I give up and they use what ever they have.
Things this addon does NOT do:
- Change the actual combat AI. This means NPCs will not charge in with melee weapons, they will only use them until they can break off and get to gun range. They do this even if they only have melee, if you take away all of Hips guns she will end up trying to say a few yards back waving that knife around at the air.
- Change what weapons NPCs are given. If they spawn with only an SVD then they can't change to anything else.
- Change weapons instantly. NPCs freak out if they change weapons too fast, the script only runs every 5 seconds.

I will be updating soon to add a slight optimization and disable this for Zombified stalkers.
I will also be adding compatibility for an NPC weapon control addon i am working on.

Damn this is cool, might be useful to give most npcs a basic knife in their presets as i don't remember looting that much melee weapons on them

Because looting such weapon (knives and axes) is set to zero. Only in few instances you can loot it from body.

question: im not sure this is from ur mod or not, but..i use ur mod with barrybogs - More Melee Features, every time i gave my companion shovel, he tried to smash enemies with it...at 20+ meters away..and like stuck in animation over and over. but not happening with vanilla melee weapons. is it incompatibility?

Because the engine AI is dumb and very few NPCs use a script based AI.

Could you make npc to run out of ammo and be forced to swap weapons? for example after 20/50 shots depending on the experience to take out a sniper and go to a rifle, the same with a certain amount of ammo to get into handgun? and rid off ammo for wasted gun in loot. Shoot counters needs to be have a cooldown too
Thats something that really could change the game for sure so you can change ammo selling and really get a weastland and be forced to take broken weapons in some situations, thing that doesnt happens never even, neither in gamma
I am testing something like that. and introducing functions that will let this addon and other similar scripts work together.
A recommendation for going melee, i think the swap should be done underground or in places with cover, into buildings. In open places npc should keep handgun, as players didn't do cose need to have it hand for a later target.
Limited ammo less the dream, the real misery is adding the corner with a monolith on the other side
that is an AI change. AI change is _way_ harder than what this tiny script is.

no its not ai, in your function find_melee you could check if npc is in undergrown level or if its in cover (emission cover place, with few exeption are clore places) and force return false or true

Doesn't work correctly, sadly.
Enemies with automatic rifles switch to pistols and starts shooting peas when I'm getting to close , instead of just MELTING me like they did before with good old Spraydown.
what two guns? Pistol should only be favored over a Rifle if that rifle qualifies as a sniper.

Is there a way to reduce the distance an NPC stands when attacking with a gun? For zombie stalkers, I gave them knives and want them to attack me, but they act like they still have guns and stop a few feet away, swinging the knives.
the check for switching to mele is being within less than one meter. you could make that shorter it at the top of the script. but all that will do is have them stop at the same point with thier gun and shoot you. this doesn't change the movement AI, how close they will come to you or when they retreat ect. it just changes what weapon they use at a given range.
changing the movement AI is hard in general. for zombified it is atleat doable simpler as they have a very basic special AI that is a script, other stalker combat AI is in the game engine.
That is the most confusing thing I have ever heard about this games engine lol.
