The original music for Quake is copyrighted and those who use it can sometimes get a copyright flag on their content. Here is an alternate soundtrack for Quake gameplay that is free from copyright claim, so you can use it for streaming and gameplay videos. This contains original compositions by Immorpher inspired by Quake 64 and two remasters of Aubrey Hodges' Quake 64 soundtrack. In general the Quake 64 soundtrack was dark and moody, thus if you want this experience in Quake, this alternate soundtrack may be for you! Much of the music here has appeared in Quake mods such as SMEJ1, SMEJ2, Alkaline, Greenwood's Alternative Quake Music Pack, and more.

Installation
For the official Steam rereleaseFor the official Steam rerelease, running "Steam Install.bat" should automatically install this music pack for you (you may need administrator privileges). If you are using another source port, or the installation doesn't work, first find your "id1" folder inside the Quake installation. For Steam it is the "\steamapps\common\Quake\rerelease\id1\" folder of the Steam directory. Then copy the provided "music" folder of this mod into the "id1" folder and replace any existing files.
To uninstall the music on Steam, use this guide to verify the local game files where it will redownload the original music: Help.steampowered.com

had no idea they were copyrighted.
that sucks. no wonder i couldn't get them to work on quake, lol.
will this work for the cd versions?
So this wont work if you play Quake music off a CD. But it will work for community source ports and the official rerelease.
You mean, the game's not under copyright, but the music's under it?
Does the game get free, but the music doesn't?
Or, by playing Quake you violate the copyright of the music artists?
I can't understand that.
The music in Quake is copyrighted by NIN. So sometimes it gets flagged by DMCA.
