Hi Sandy, I'm also new to this. check out the Battlefield single player forums. you'll find loads of advise and tutorials there.
The following links may be useful. There will be more. I have a link somewhere for the exact thing you are looking for, but my desktop is a mess and i at this time have literally hundreds of folders nested just for BF2. If i find it I'll post it here, in the mean time check the following links:

Somewhere between these pages i.e pg 1 to 10 there is a link to a tutorial on how to add weapons via the Battlefield single player forums. You can see the tutorials even if you are not logged into the site. At the moment its impossible to create a free account becasue the Captcha is broken however apparently one of the admins is trying to fix the issue. I've been trying to log into the site for weeks, but forgot my password and becasue of the Captcha issue can';t recover my password. Also, someone posted some code about adding weapons somewhere in the first 10 pages of BF2 addons..
