Is it possible to replace the minimap with a compass that doesn't show the map?
Not with a nice background. That was what I originally planned, then I saw there aren't offsets for the background.
Pushed a small update, hopefully the minimalist compass is close enough to what you desired.
Dynamic Hud has a minimalist hud that has a compass that's just what you want, I'm sure you could port that over.

This looks great. What are the txr_sleep.script and txr_thirst.script scripts for? Are they a must?
Unfortunately, yes. They're vanilla other than the X/Y coordinates. If you use sleep/thirst mods, you'll have to replace the lines in those mods with the coords from this for it to look as intended. Lines in sleep are 207, 209; Thirst is 213, 215.

thanks for the mod, can you tell me what coordinates to change to put the hud on the bottom left of the screen - I can't get used to it being centred and it seems to be a little cut off at the bottom of my screen.
I cant play Anomaly without this addon.... Please make an update for version RC17+.....
