Point Alpha was one of four U.S. observation points on the Hessian inner-German border. Today
is "Point Alpha" is the name of a reminder, a memorial and meeting place on the road between Geisa (Thuringia) and Rasdorf (Hesse). Due to the similarity of names it is sometimes confused with the Checkpoint Alpha (Helmstedt border crossing-Marie Born).
In the immediate neighborhood Geisas that once the westernmost city of the Eastern Bloc, met the observation point, "Point Alpha" until the fall of the Iron Curtain, an important observation mission in NATO defense concept. On the other side of the border states of the corresponding observation points were established by the Warsaw Pact.
The base was located in the center of the NATO defense line "Fulda Gap" (Fulda Gap), in which NATO expected in case of emergency, the invasion of Warsaw Pact troops. The "Fulda Gap" retired from Fulda to Herleshausen over the near Bad Neustadt. The name of Point Alpha goes back to the fact that it was the first built observation point.
The term "hottest point in the Cold War," however, is misleading. The U.S. Border Observation points were used exclusively for observation, even at the first tangible signs of an invasion by Warsaw Pact countries to have the crew from Point Alpha withdrawn. Direct combat operations were not provided.
As an observation point Point Alpha was also appropriate given it is located at 411 meters altitude on a mountain range and thus a good overview of the assumed front staging area of the Warsaw Pact in
Ulstergrund offered. Also for the interception of radio traffic from the east, the geographical conditions were favorable.
Erroneously, it's often said, Point Alpha was also the westernmost point of the GDR. This was, however, about 12 km to the southwest, near the village of Reinhard's (until 2 October 1990, the most westerly inhabited area of the Warsaw Pact) and now forms the westernmost point of the federal state of Thuringia.
