Defense of the Ancients (DotA) is a custom scenario for Warcraft III, based on the "Aeon of Strife" map for StarCraft. The objective of the scenario is to destroy the opponents' "Ancient". The two teams' ancients are heavily guarded structures at opposing corners of the map. Players use powerful units known as heroes, and are assisted by allied heroes and AI-controlled fighters called "creeps". As in role-playing games, players level up their hero and use gold to buy equipment during the mission.

The "Defense of the Ancients" is actually a clever mod that incorporates a whole new "game type" for Warcraft III/FT. This mod makes players fight each other with tactically advanced heroes, mixing items and skills to produce the best killing machine. But it has a lot of flaws. First is the imbalance of some heroes such as Pudge. These heroes are fought with probably the same tactic every time, for example: Pudge uses meat hook behind trees, after that rot an dismemberment. Most heroes follow the same usage of skills that can guarantee a kill, though this also proves to be repetitive. The map also has been repetitive, the three lane map gives it no varieties of more tactical game play (I hope a new map which is as challenging as the original can be made). A modified graphical engine can also be appreciated, as well as more heroes to maintain balance. All in all the game is still enjoyable and is better if played with friends, because this game incorporates a lot of teamwork to be triumphant.Plus the WTF and -fun modes are really fun, especially for non-serious players :D
