Explaining the military units of Age of Stainless Steel (AOE2 mod), types, advantages and disadvantages and how to use them. This is part 1 - the Archery Range units.

This article is a explanation of the military units of Age of Stainless Steel mod. The units will be group in lines (equal a base unit with all it's upgrade unit), and will start organizing them in their train buildings. The list starts first the the common trained units that consumes only food and wood to be trained, and only tent population:

1. Archery Range units

Archer Line


a. Archer Line. This is not like the vanilla line, units on this line are Archer Militia, Archer and Heavy Archer. This line is composed of skirmish units with bow and arrow. The advantage of this line is that has a long range, a good rate of fire, low cost, able to use fire arrow (bonus vs buildings) and it's one of the first unit that can be recruited. The disadvantage are the low attack, not a good armor, low accuracy and being a foot unit. These units are good for start of the game, but very weak in the high ages.

Crossbow Line


b. Crossbow Line. This is a new line, but not a new name, it is composed by Crossbow Militia, Crossbowman and Pavise Crossbowman. The advantage of this line is that can be train 2 times faster than archers, has a long range, has better accuracy and with the last upgrade make this unit very effective again other range units. The disadvantage are low rate of fire, low attack, not a good armor, being a foot unit, and cost more than archer. These units are good for start of the game, but very weak in the high ages.

Arbalest Line


c. Arbalest Line. This is a new line, but not a new name, these units just have a better crossbow than the other line. It is composed by Arbalest Militia and Arbalest. The advantage of this line is that have a good attack that can penetrate most of the units and their armor can be upgrade and have high values. The disadvantage are low rate of fire (3 times lower than archer), it's not an early unit, the first unit of this line is very weak by recruiting age standards, their damage per second is lower than archer, they cost more than archer and being a foot unit. The power of this unit can be seen after fully upgraded.

Gunner Line


d. Gunner Line. This is the same line as vanilla, but has a new unit the Arquebusier. This basically is the ultimate range soldier. It is composed by Hand Gunners and Arquebusier. The advantage of this line is the very high attack, can penetrate every armor, like Arbalest line, their armor can have high values. The disadvantage are low rate of fire (3 times lower than archer), it's a late unit, the first unit of this line has weak armor and low range, their cost is high and being a foot unit. There is no match by another range unit.

Skirmisher Line


e. Skirmisher. This is the same line as vanilla, by name and description. Their attributes has been changed, and they are still a good anti archer unit. The advantage of this line is the good attack, very effective against units with no shield, best rate of fire of any range unit, very good damage per second and low cost. The disadvantage are low range, low armor, weak HP and being a foot unit. This is an early unit, but can still be very effective, in late game, against infantry with high armor but with no shield.
