The Baltic Offensive - Memel Front (1944)
In 1944, after the effective operation Bagration, the Army Group Center was partly broken and separated from the other fronts. The german army launched a counterattack under operation "Doppelkopf" to try to distract the Soviets, focused on the South. After the failure of such counter attack, the defences at the Army Group North had been weakened in benefit to the attack. The Russians saw this as an oportunity to completely destroy the presence of the Germanic forces on the North. In mid September, the shock forces started the assault on 3 fronts: Tallin, Riga and the Baltic Islands on the Gulf of Finland. The ambitious plan left behind hundreds of thousands of soviet casualities, but the attack was successfull in the start.
However, the Russian High Command planned a futher ambitious plan to completely cut connection of the German North and South fronts. The 1st Baltic Army was dispatched to assault the region of Memel, where a fierce Third Panzer Army awaited the attack...
