Many people here on IndieDB are game developers. As game developers, regardless of what software you use, or programming language, or graphic design software or whatever, we all know how frustrating it can be at times. That is natural for game development though, an obstacle that will always be there, it's part of what game development is. It is this alone that is very off-putting to many potential developers looking to make games. Fortunately there are ways to manage this frustration so you can stay productive in a work environment with minimum stress.

The main way that I have discovered to manage stress is to just turn on some music. On my game, Droid Uprising, that I have been working on for a while now, in a way this is my first real game. I had made one game before this, but it was extremely simple and of very low quality, so there is a big leap there. At times it has been very frustrating, as I have been learning the ropes of Unity as a whole during the development cycle so far. During this stage of learning game development, it is very normal to be running into errors at every turn and getting frustrated from every little undesired problem with the game, and want to quit and go back to being simply a game player. Just listening to music can work wonders, likely of whatever genre you wish to listen to. My music genre of choice is metal, and I believe that metal is best suited for relieving stress, as it was created as a way for the musicians to let out their stress about life as a whole, however I'm sure that other genres can fill the gap too. Many times it has averted frustration because when I start to get frustrated about something I just pause and just soak up the music. That alone has gotten me to keep going when it was extremely difficult, as what is a better way to stay far beyond driven than listening to some Far Beyond Driven? Even when you are not frustrated, just putting on some music can bring you to A New level. Hell even if metal doesn't float your boat, try it with whatever you like to listen to. Remember, if you let the frustration put you off from game development, it's off to Never Never Land with whatever project you were working on and all potential projects you could have made.

For all reading this, what is the point in just reading about it? Try it for yourself and it might just help you stay engaged on your development processes. Many people who have done other work outside of game development will have had music on in the background and may have already noticed this effect, as it does not just work with game development.
