I gave Mount and Blade a quick spin today (thinking - if it's at the top of Moddb's ranking all the time, there must be something to it). And damn, is it hard to coordinate steering your horse while trying to slash at enemy knights. Seemed pretty fun though :).
As it's neither libre/open-source nor multiplayer focused, I'm not be looking into it any further though.
