Introduction

As many of us Project Managers know from difficult experience, one of the biggest challenges we face is finding enough of the right people to take part in a development project. My project is no different, and it has some challenges that are by no means new to people on this site but I thought i'd share my experiences in tackling that challenge. I'm still nowhere near getting the size of team that I want to in order to complete a rather ambitious project, so I will update this blog post as and when new ideas or old ones have helped me in building my team.

Part 1 - The Friend Zone

The first place that most people start when they want to build a team to develop a game is always by trying to inspire your friends or colleagues to join the team. This is definitely a good place to start assuming you have some talented and eager friends. If you have done a course in Games Development then it is likely that you met a lot of like-minded people that are more than willing to help in exchange for some portfolio work and the enjoyment factor of working on an interesting project. That is the key thing here, your project has to have something about it that both gives them the confidence that their time will not be wasted on a game that they either don't have the confidence it will be good enough or that it will even be completed.

So, what you need to have before you can even get your friends interested in joining your team you should have at least a concept that can get people to want to be involved and help out. With this you should be able to have a team of 5-10 regular modders and you can start putting some serious effort in developing the concept and design of the game, and you shouldn't have more than 6 or 7 for that anyway?

*This is a work-in progress, will be finished shortly
